At Capoeira Morro Verde’s 6th annual batizado this past weekend, Contra-Mestra Gata Brava opened the ceremony with a stark reminder of the severe—and often brutal—social injustices afflicting minority groups in the US. Her soul-baring speech demonstrated dignity, composure, and strength in the face of recent events; yet the visibly upset Contra-Mestra did not hold back in telling the crowd that the status quo in each of us—no matter how well-intentioned—is not going to be enough to make a difference.

She finished her speech and opened the batizado’s roda by boldly stating:

I believe all lives matter – everyone believes all lives matter - but that’s not what this is about. Black Lives Matter. With that being said, please play, sing, clap and celebrate why we do what we do. And remember that capoeira is, was, and always will be a way, our way, to combat oppression and discrimination.

English transcription:

As happy as I am to be here with all of you in this moment, I am angry, I’m frustrated and I’m afraid for my country, for the world and for my friends. One of the reasons that I do capoeira is that it helps me express myself. And now, when the injustices in this world leave me speechless, I need capoeira more than ever. We need capoeira more than ever. I’m inspired by my work with underserved youth and I know you think I’m referencing low income minority communities – which I am. But I am also talking about affluent, culturally deprived suburban communities. I brought capoeira to New Hope, Pennsylvania because New Hope is underserved.

Reading the newspaper is not enough. Having a black friend is not enough. Voting for a black president is not enough. Even acknowledging systemic oppression, unconscious bias and racism is not enough.

We need to do something and I don’t know what to do. But I know capoeira and I know its roots and I know how powerful it is. And I know that capoeira is as relevant now as it was 400 years ago. Capoeira continues to evolve, adapt and empower.

I believe all lives matter – everyone believes all lives matter - but that’s not what this is about. Black Lives Matter.

With that being said, please play, sing, clap and celebrate why we do what we do. And remember that capoeira is, was, and always will be a way, our way, to combat oppression and discrimination.

Assim como estou feliz de estar aqui com vocês neste momento, eu estou com raiva, eu estou frustrada, e eu estou com medo pelo meu país, pelo mundo, e pelos meus amigos. Uma daz razões pela qual eu faço capoeira é que ela me ajuda a me expressar. E agora, com as injustiças neste mundo, eu fico sem palavras; eu preciso da capoeira mais do que nunca. Nós precisamos capoeira mais do que nunca. Eu sou inspirada pelo meu trabalho com jovens carentes e eu sei que você está pensando que eu estou fazendo referência às comunidades em minoria de baixa renda – na qual estou. Mas eu também estou falando de comunidades de alta renda do subúrbio, deprivadas culturalmente. Eu trouxe capoeira para New Hope, Pensilvânia, porque New Hope é carente.

Ler o jornal não é o suficiente. Ter um amigo negro não é o suficiente. Votar em um presidente negro não é o suficiente. Mesmo tendo o reconhecimento do sistema de opressão, do preconceito inconsciente, e do racismo, não é o suficiente. Nós precisamos fazer alguma coisa e eu não sei o que fazer. Mas eu conheço a capoeira e suas raízes, e eu sei o quão poderosa ela é. E eu sei que a capoeira é tão relevante hoje como foi há 400 anos. Capoeira continua se evoluindo, se adaptando, e se fortalecendo.

Eu acredito que todas as vidas importam – todo mundo acredita que todas as vidas importam – mas não é disso que se trata. Vida dos negros importam.

Com isto dito, por favor jogue, cante, bata palmas, e celebre o porquê de nós fazermos o que fazemos. E lembre que a capoeira é, foi, e sempre será um jeito, nosso jeito, de combater a opressão e discriminação.
